How to Reduce Plastic Pollution in the Ocean: Practical Solutions

Posted by Joe Wasia on

Plastic pollution in our oceans is a global crisis, with profound implications for marine ecosystems, wildlife, and our planet as a whole. The sheer volume of plastic waste in our oceans is alarming. Based on our partner at Starboard's research,  the total estimated amount of ocean pollution varies from 8 million tonnes to almost 15 million tonnes. But there are steps we can take to combat this problem and protect our marine environments. In this article, we'll explore practical solutions to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean.

Reduce Single-Use Plastics

One of the most effective ways to tackle ocean plastic pollution is by reducing our use of single-use plastics. Opt for reusable alternatives such as metal or glass containers, cloth bags, and stainless steel straws. By cutting down on disposable plastics, you can make a significant impact on the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.

Properly Dispose of Plastic Waste

Ensure that you dispose of plastic waste in the right way. Recycling is an essential part of this process. Learn about your local recycling program and follow the guidelines. Additionally, if recycling isn't an option, make sure plastic waste is securely contained to prevent it from being blown or washed into waterways.

Participate in Beach Cleanup

Join local beach cleanup initiatives and volunteer your time to help remove plastic debris from coastal areas. These efforts not only make a direct impact but also raise awareness about the issue of ocean plastic pollution.

Support Organizations Fighting Plastic Pollution

Numerous organizations and initiatives are dedicated to reducing plastic pollution in the ocean. Consider supporting them through donations or volunteering. These organizations often drive policy changes and implement large-scale cleanup efforts.

With our partner, SOMWR is picking up 1.4kg of plastic waste per product purchase. Our aim is to be responsible and environmentally friendly apparel brand. By collecting 1.4kg of plastic for each of our products, we aim to sensibly reduce the amount of plastic that enters the oceans per person each year.

You can help and support by purchasing our Climate Hero products & Ocean Hero products.

Raise Awareness

Educate yourself and others about the issue of plastic pollution in the ocean. Use social media, blogs, or local events to spread the word and encourage people to take action.

You can learn more by subscribing to our newsletter to get more information regarding our action to limit climate changes.

Or you can visit our partner website about the news on sustainability.

By taking these steps, we can all play a role in reducing plastic pollution in the ocean. The health of our oceans is essential to the overall well-being of our planet, and our collective efforts can make a difference. Join the fight against plastic pollution and be part of the solution.
