10X Climate Positive: What & How SOMWR Efforts To Limit Climate Change Effects

Posted by Joe Wasia on

As our motto, "or our currently unavoidable CO2 emissions, we make sure that we offset them 10X over". In this article, let's dive in on our goal to get 10X Climate Positive and our efforts to limit climate change effects, helping nature to become strong once again.

REFLECTIONS ON THE 'CONVENTIONAL' STRATEGY

Numerous organizations and nations are formulating strategies to reduce their annual carbon emissions in order to adhere to the objectives of keeping global warming below a 1 ½ degrees Celsius increase, with their target deadlines spanning from 2050 to 2065.

Direct air carbon capture technology, while having the potential to lower the expenses associated with achieving worldwide climate targets, would require a substantial portion of the world's energy resources by 2100.

The largest carbon capture facility on the planet, the Orca plant situated in Iceland, is capable of extracting 4,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually and sequestering it deep underground for mineralization.

This is analogous to the carbon capture abilities of a mere 6,000 Mangrove trees over a 25-year span, operating without any human intervention or machinery while simultaneously fostering a thriving ecosystem.

Continuing to primarily concentrate on emissions reduction and energy-intensive carbon capture until 2050 will result in ongoing climate challenges.

We must embrace a more ambitious approach that prioritizes natural climate solutions, which also play a crucial role in oxygen production as a byproduct of photosynthesis.

WHAT IS SOMWR 10X CLIMATE POSITIVE INITIATIVES?

Starboard and SOMWR maintain strong connections with various collaborative partners and event organizers. Significantly, events and travel activities tend to generate substantial quantities of CO2 emissions within a short time span. To mitigate the environmental impact associated with these events, our Environmental team meticulously calculates the carbon emissions for events in collaboration with partners.

This calculation encompasses all aspects, including travel undertaken by athletes, staff, volunteers, as well as the energy and fuel consumption at these events. Our offsetting strategy revolves around the utilization of natural climate solutions, primarily focusing on mangrove reforestation. Under the 10X initiative, we aim to plant mangroves capable of absorbing ten times the quantity of emissions produced. In 2022, this equated to planting 30 mangroves for each tonne of CO2 emissions identified.

Consequently, this approach results in the absorption of ten tonnes for every one tonne of emissions released, and this process continues over a 25-year period.

As a fun fact, photosynthesis has played a pivotal role on Earth for over 2.5 billion years, contributing to the creation of a habitable climate. This history underscores our dedication to achieving a 10X carbon-positive status.

HOW SOMWR PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY?

From the beginning, SOMWR has taken steps to be the best clothing brand for the planet. Whilst also taking measures to ensure the materials used by the brand release the least amount of CO2, and use the least amount of water, there are still areas where we need to monitor and reduce. Such as areas of travel for the staff and electricity usage.

SOMWR aims to become a force in natural CO2 sequestration through reforestation and combatting ocean plastic pollution through collecting beach/ ocean plastic litter.

At SOMWR, all of our products are designed to have the least ecological impact possible. That's why we plant one VCS certified Mangrove and pick up 1.4 kg of beach/ocean plastic, promoting environmental sustainability.

HOW CAN YOU HELP US?

Our SOMWR products plant 10 mangroves for every ‘Climate Hero’ product, and 1 mangrove for every ‘Ocean Hero’ product.
